Behind Broken Tart: Motherhood, Pastry & Real-Life Balance

Written by: Michaela Reinertsen

Meet the powerhouse sister duo behind Broken Tart, Oak Park’s beloved bakery and café.

Katie and Krissy Mack are Chicago-based moms, entrepreneurs, and the talent behind some of the city’s most irresistible pastries. Together, they juggle four boys, a thriving bakery, and the dreamy Le Marché market—with humor, heart, and just the right amount of hustle. In this edition of Danrie Diaries, they share what it’s like being “boy moms,” running a business, parenting surprises, and their favorite summer picks from Danrie.

Let’s jump into it! Between the two of you, you have 4 boys! What’s your favorite part of being a “boy mom”?
Katie: I love the energy my boys bring—they keep me on my toes and constantly spark my creativity. You’ve got to keep things interesting and fun!
Krissy: My boys are wild, but also the sweetest. They’ve taught me to go with the flow and not sweat the small stuff.

You’re coming up on 3 years of running your award-winning café, Broken Tart! What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone starting their own business?
Katie: Don’t be afraid to ask for help—especially in the early days. Getting a business off the ground takes a lot of time, energy, and sweat equity. Lean on your support system whenever you can.
Krissy: There’s always going to be a reason not to start—ignore it. If you’re dreaming about your own business, just jump in and go for it!

What does your day-to-day look like navigating Broken Tart and mom life?
Katie: It’s all about staying organized. Every day at the bakery is different—just like every day with the kids. Solid routines help me stay present with my boys before and after bakery hours, and let me really focus on work and the customer experience while I’m there.
Krissy: Most days start with a workout at my favorite local Pilates studio, then it’s lunch-making and school drop-off. I’m usually at the bakery by 8am. Some days I’m baking or developing new recipes, other days I’m hauling 100 pounds of ingredients into my car. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s always fun.

All of our kids are so close in age—it’s been amazing to go through all these phases together. What’s been the biggest surprise about becoming a parent?
Katie: I quickly learned that no one really has it all figured out when it comes to parenting—and that’s okay! Learning to pivot and go with the flow has been huge for me.
Krissy: The pace of life shifts dramatically—and I love it. I’ve learned to prioritize my own sleep, health, and well-being so I can show up as the best parent possible. Life feels chaotic, but in the best way.

What’s your go-to Broken Tart order? (Beverage and pastry—obviously.)
Katie: Oat milk cortado and a slice of Ricotta Chip Cake.
Krissy: A “GoGo” (iced espresso with a splash of oat milk), a Martha Juice, and our Kale Salad Scone.

Tell us about the French-inspired market you run in Oak Park! What was the inspiration behind it?
Katie: We love supporting small businesses and uncovering local gems—so why not get others excited about them, too? Le Marché is a Parisian-inspired outdoor market with a rotating mix of vintage sellers, artists, food vendors, and everything in between. It’s such a joy to introduce our community to the amazing small brands we’ve found.

What are a few of your favorite summer pieces you’ve picked up for the boys on Danrie?
Katie: We live for a set—especially in the summer. It makes getting dressed so easy, and everyone looks put together. We’re loving the Elliot Seersucker Shirt Set from Konges Sløjd and the Sea Life Set from Arsène et les Pipelettes.
Krissy: Danrie has the most special knitwear. I love all the knit polos and short sleeve button-downs for summer. My boys are obsessed with the Hansen Stripe Polo by Flöss and their swimsuits from Lison Paris.
